Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has laid out an ambitious, long-term vision for the future of artificial intelligence, centered on the concept of "personal superintelligence." In a detailed letter, Zuckerberg outlined a future where advanced AI systems act as personal assistants to empower individuals in achieving their goals, contrasting with other approaches focused on automating labor . This strategy sets Meta on a course to build artificial general intelligence (AGI), a form of AI that could surpass human cognitive abilities.

The core of Zuckerberg's vision is the idea that superintelligence should not be a centralized tool that replaces human endeavor, but a personalized force that enhances individual creativity and growth. “An even more meaningful impact on our lives will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals,” Zuckerberg wrote . This technology, which he describes as “AI that surpasses human intelligence in every way,” is now considered “in sight” . To realize this, Meta is already beginning to see “glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves.”

Infrastructure and Talent Investment

To power this ambitious roadmap, Meta is making massive investments in infrastructure and talent. The company aims to acquire approximately 350,000 NVIDIA H100 graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of 2024, creating a compute power equivalent to nearly 600,000 H100s . This massive build-out includes constructing multiple “multi-gigawatt” AI clusters and fast-tracking data center deployments, even using temporary tent-like structures . In parallel, Meta has established the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) to spearhead this effort. This new unit, which operates independently from the established FAIR research division, aims to unify work on the Llama models with the long-term AGI goal . The company is aggressively poaching top talent, hiring ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao as the lab's chief scientist .

Open Source Strategy and Future Challenges

Historically, Meta has been a strong proponent of open-source AI, releasing its Llama models for broad use by developers. Zuckerberg has argued this approach fosters safety and innovation while preventing power from being concentrated in a few companies . However, as the company moves closer to superintelligence, there are signs of a more cautious stance. Zuckerberg acknowledged that as models become extremely large and powerful, “a whole different set of safety concerns” arise that require rigorous mitigation . This suggests a potential shift, where Meta may choose not to open-source its most advanced, frontier models .

The vision of personal superintelligence is also deeply intertwined with Meta's hardware ambitions.
