Google is enhancing its AI-powered research tool, NotebookLM, by adding a dynamic new feature called "Video Overviews." This tool automatically creates videos on requested topics, pulling data from a user's uploaded images, diagrams, quotes, and documents. Currently, these overviews are generated in the form of narrated slideshows, but Google plans to expand the capabilities in the future.
Announced at I/O, the Video Overviews feature serves as a visual alternative to the existing Audio Overviews, which create podcast-style summaries. The new feature is designed to be uniquely effective for explaining data, demonstrating processes, and making abstract concepts more tangible. Users can customize the output by specifying topics to focus on, learning goals, or the target audience. Initially, Video Overviews are only available in English, with more languages expected to be supported in the future.
NotebookLM, first introduced as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, is an AI-powered research and writing assistant. It is powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google's most capable model, and allows users to upload sources like documents, PDFs, web URLs, and even YouTube videos to create a personalized knowledge base. Unlike traditional chatbots, NotebookLM grounds its responses solely in the user-provided material, ensuring accuracy and providing clear inline citations.
The platform has seen significant expansion, now being available in over 200 countries and territories. It also supports 108 interface languages and 38 languages for sources and chat. Recent upgrades have also increased source capacity, allowing for up to 50 sources per notebook, with each source containing as many as 500,000 words. These enhancements, combined with the new Video Overviews feature, make NotebookLM an increasingly powerful tool for students, researchers, and anyone looking to synthesize and understand complex information.
