Microsoft Launches Copilot Mode in Edge Browser

Microsoft has announced the launch of Copilot Mode, an experimental feature designed to transform Microsoft Edge into an AI-powered browser. This new feature aims to reimagine web browsing by utilizing an AI agent to assist users in managing tasks and navigating information.

When Copilot Mode is enabled, it transforms the Edge interface. New tabs show a single input box that combines chat, search, and web navigation functions. With the user's permission, the AI assistant can analyze all open browser tabs, allowing it to compare information and assist with various tasks. For example, when researching vacation rentals across multiple sites, users can ask Copilot to quickly identify which option is closest to the beach.

"With Copilot Mode on, you enable innovative AI features in Edge that enhance your browser," said Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge VP of Product. "It doesn't just wait idly for you to click but anticipates what you might want to do next."

One of the key features is natural voice navigation, which allows users to speak commands directly to Copilot. In the future, Microsoft plans to expand Copilot Mode's capabilities to include more advanced actions, like making reservations and managing tasks on users' behalf. Copilot is always accessible in a dynamic side panel, helping with tasks like summarizing content without losing the user's place on the webpage.

Microsoft emphasizes user privacy and control. Copilot Mode is a fully opt-in feature, and users can toggle it on or off at will through Edge settings. The company assures users that their data is protected under Microsoft's privacy standards and that there will always be clear visual cues when Copilot is viewing or listening.

Copilot Mode is available for free for a limited time in all Copilot-supported markets, exclusively on Edge for Windows and Mac. This launch positions Microsoft in competition with other AI search tools, such as Google's AI Mode for Chrome.
